On Sunday 16 June, according to reports published in the national press, President Jair Bolsonaro used the social networks to inform that he studies a reduction in the import taxes of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products of the order of 12% (from 16 % will fall to 4%), remembering that information technologies are currently used in virtually all sectors of the economy.

The special secretary for Foreign Trade and International Affairs of the Ministry of Economy, Marcos Troyjo, had already come up with this possibility. For him, facilitating the entry into the country of IT products is a way of stimulating the competitiveness of companies. The Information Technology (IT) industry covers a wide range of activities, ranging from data processing to consulting services. The high tax burden is perceived as an obstacle by companies in the sector to enter the Brazilian market. Products for end consumers like computers and smartphones, launched abroad, reach Brazilian consumers at extremely high prices, or simply are not released here.

For information technology professionals, who largely decide the strategies for digitization as well as cyber security, it is important to be aware of the consequences that this possible reduction of taxes will bring.
